The Semantic Web: What you need to know?

The key goal of the Semantic Web is to trigger the evolution of the existing Web to enable users to search, discover, share and join information with less effort.

Humans can use the Web to execute multiple tasks, such as booking online tickets, searching for different information, using online dictionaries, etc.

The term was coined by Tim Berners-Lee for a web of data (or data web) that can be processed by machines —that is, one in which much of the meaning is machine-readable.

While its critics have questioned its feasibility, proponents argue that applications in library and information science, industry, biology and human sciences research have already proven the validity of the original concept.

Berners-Lee originally expressed his vision of the Semantic Web as follows:

I have a dream for the Web [in which computers] become capable of analyzing all the data on the Web – the content, links, and transactions between people and computers.

A “Semantic Web”, which makes this possible, has yet to emerge, but when it does, the day-to-day mechanisms of trade, bureaucracy and our daily lives will be handled by machines talking to machines.

The “intelligent agents” people have touted for ages will finally materialize. The 2001 Scientific American article by Berners-Lee, Hendler, and Lassila described an expected evolution of the existing Web to a Semantic Web.

In 2006, Berners-Lee and colleagues stated that: “This simple idea…remains largely unrealized”.In 2013, more than four million Web domains contained Semantic Web markup.

Even so, machines are not able to carry out any of these tasks without human intervention because Web pages are made to be read by humans, not machines.

The Semantic Web can be considered a vision for the future in which data could be quickly interpreted by machines, allowing them to carry out numerous tedious tasks related to discovering, blending, and taking action on the information available on the Web.

The Semantic Web is a process that allows machines to quickly understand and react to complicated human requests subject to their meaning. This kind of understanding mandates that the appropriate information sources are semantically structured, which is a difficult task.

The battle to bring antivenoms to Africa

Snake antivenoms have been around for 125 years, are effective and can be produced cheaply at scale. Yet Africa, with its abundance of deadly snakes, has an alarming shortage of the life-saving medicine.

Experts and campaigners blame a combination of weak production capacity, feeble policy and oversight, high prices and a general lack of concern for the plight of people in poor, remote areas of the world.

Complex process

The method of antivenom production has changed very little since it was first developed by French immunologist Albert Calmette in the late 19th century. It remains a painstaking, time-consuming process, although researchers are working to develop synthetic alternatives.

First, a technician has to milk a snake’s venom in a dangerous manoeuvre that sees it holding the animal’s head still while it bites a cup covered in plastic film, releasing its poison — a small amount each time — into the container.

Small venom doses are then injected into a large domestic animal, usually a horse, to trigger an immune response and the production of toxin-attacking antibodies.

After several doses over a period of about a year, the horse produces so many antibodies that it becomes immune to the venom, at which point blood can be taken from the animal.

In a lab, antibodies are then separated from the blood, to be given to snakebite victims — who may need several doses.

An antivenom usually works only for a specific species, or small group of species of snake.

A key challenge, especially in poor, remote areas of the world where most snakebites occur, is that most antivenoms need to be refrigerated.

A ‘shameful failure’

Already patchy, availability of antivenoms in Africa was thrown into disarray when French laboratory SANOFI stopped production in 2014 of its FAV-Afrique drug, which was effective against a number of species, including some of the most dangerous on the continent.

The last available doses expired mid-2016.

SANOFI was moved mainly by financial considerations. The prohibitive price of a single dose — more than $100 — rendered sales in Africa unprofitable.

The failure to use antivenom “to save tens of millions of lives… is a shameful failure. Nowhere in the world is this more confronting than in Africa,” says the Global Snakebite Initiative, adding in a report on its website that the “collapse of the snake antivenom market in Africa” was a “medical tragedy”.

The cause is multifold.

In a vicious circle, unaffordability leads to lower demand and falling sales, which result in reduced production, higher costs, and raised prices for consumers.

Even an antivenom produced on the continent and effective against multiple snake species, is nigh impossible to find further north than South Africa, where it is made, a 2018 study by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine found.

“The market remains volatile because they are small producers and the African antivenom market is limited,” said Julien Potet, an expert in neglected tropical diseases with aid group Doctors Without Borders.

Inconsistent quality standards and lacking oversight have also seen an infiltration of counterfeit and “inappropriate” antivenoms developed for different snake types in other countries. Using the wrong antivenom can be dangerous, even deadly.

Doctors Without Borders, which describes Africa’s antivenom shortage as a public health crisis, has launched its own survey of available antivenoms.

Most were brought to the market “without any clinical information, without any data on their efficacy or safety in humans,” said Potet.

A further problem: even if antivenoms were available, people most likely to be bitten by a venomous snake live prohibitively far from a clinic or hospital, some of which have no refrigeration capacity, and with medical staff that have never been trained in treating snakebites.

Half a million bites

“We are losing around 1,000 people in Kenya each year from snakebites,” said Royjan Taylor, director of the Bio-Ken snake farm and research centre on the country’s east coast.

This is out of 81,000-138,000 worldwide.

Africa alone sees about half a million snakebites that need treatment every year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Governments and the international community therefore should really pick that up… What I would like to see over the next five to 10 years, maybe even 15 years, is for an antivenom to be produced for each area of the world that has a problem and that antivenom should be provided to those people free of charge,” Royjan said.

The WHO has launched a massive review of the availability, efficacy and safety of snakebite serum available in Africa, where the majority of countries have no effective or affordable antivenom at all.


Teleportation technology and Human exploration

Teleportation has become a standard operation in quantum optics labs around the world. The technique relies on the strange phenomenon of entanglement.

This occurs when two quantum objects, such as photons, form at the same instant and point in space and so share the same existence. In technical terms, they are described by the same wave function.

Theoretically, there are really only two ways this can(’t) be done – physical deconstruction at x and reconstitution at y, or the translation of one’s person into data to be transmitted, then reconverted into matter, like some organic fax machine.

The curious thing about entanglement is that this shared existence continues even when the photons are separated by vast distances. So a measurement on one immediately influences the state of the other, regardless of the distance between them.

Impossible? In 1993 an international group of six scientists, showed that perfect teleportation is possible in principle, or at least not against the laws of physics. More recently scientists both in the US and China have been trying. Just last year, Chinese scientists were able to “teleport” photons to a satellite 300 miles away, using a phenomenon called “quantum entanglement”.

Simply put this “spooky action at a distance” (as Einstein dubbed it) is where a pair of photons are able to simultaneously share the same state, even when separated by vast distances. Change the state of one particle, and weirdly, the other changes too, with no detectable connection.

In 1998, physicists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), along with two European groups, made IBM’s teleportation theory a reality by successfully teleporting a photon — a particle of energy that carries light.

The Caltech team read the atomic structure of a photon, sent this information across 3.28 feet (about 1 meter) of coaxial cable and created a replica of the photon on the other side. As predicted, the original photon no longer existed once the replica appeared.
In order to carry out the experiment, the Caltech group had to skirt a little something called the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

As any boxed, quantum-state feline will tell you, this principle states that you cannot simultaneously know the location and the momentum of a particle. It’s also the main barrier for teleportation of objects larger than a photon.
But if you can’t know the position of a particle, then how can you engage in a bit of quantum teleportation?

In order to teleport a photon without violating the Heisenberg Principle, the Caltech physicists used a phenomenon known as entanglement. In entanglement, you need at least three photons to achieve quantum teleportation:

Since 1998, scientists haven’t quite worked their way up to teleporting baboons, as teleporting living matter is infinitely tricky. Still, their progress is quite impressive. In 2002, researchers at the Australian National University successfully teleported a laser beam, and in 2006, a team at Denmark’s Niels Bohr Institute teleported information stored in a laser beam into a cloud of atoms about 1.6 feet (half a meter) away.

“It is one step further because for the first time it involves teleportation between light and matter, two different objects,” explained team leader Dr. Eugene Polzik. “One is the carrier of information and the other one is the storage medium” [source: CBC].

In 2012, researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China made a new teleportation record. They teleported a photon 60.3 miles (97 kilometers), 50.3 miles (81 kilometers) farther than the previous record [source: Slezak]. Just two years later, European physicists were able to teleport quantum information through an ordinary optical fiber used for telecommunications [source: Emerging Technology from the arXiv].

In 2014, researchers Ronald Hanson and colleagues from the Technical University Delft in the Netherlands, demonstrated the teleportation of information between two entangled quantumbits three metres apart.

In 2016, Y. Wei proposed that particles themselves could teleport from one place to another.[12] This is called particle teleportation. With this concept, superconductivity can be viewed as the teleportation of some electrons in the superconductor and superfluidity as the teleportation of some of the atoms in the cellular tube. Chinese physicists are trying to verify this concept experimentally.

Given these advancements, you can see how quantum teleportation will affect the world of quantum computing far before it helps your morning commute time. Morocco still trails far behind in Africa startups ecosystem

As at 2018, Morocco is home to no less than 24 accelerators, incubators, co-working spaces or other types of tech hubs with more than half located in Casablanca alone.

Among these, the work done by organisations like Numa Casablanca, New Work Lab, Jokkolabs, Enactus Morocco or LaFactory could be highlighted. It is also worth mentioning that more tech hubs should come to enrich and support the existing ecosystem.
Such obstacles are in a country where tech startups have the potential to employ young people to build the nation’s internal market, according to a World Bank appraisal for Morocco’s $50 million loan request to finance startups.

While investment in Africa’s startups is rapidly growing, the money going into that sector in Morocco still trails far behind other countries on the continent. In 2017 venture capital funding across Africa reached $560 million, according to Partech Ventures. South Africa was the leading investment destination, attracting $167.9 million in 2017, followed by Kenya ($147 million) and Nigeria ($114.6 million). By contrast, Morocco attracted just $3.9 million in venture capital in 2017, according to Partech.

The World Bank says Morocco still needs better access to capital, greater legal protections, and more business networks.
According to l’Economiste, however, innovative Moroccan project bearers have limited access to financial means to materialize their ideas.

Despite government-assisted initiatives to boost entrepreneurship and information technology-related projects, l’Economiste reports that only 10 percent of Moroccan start ups have had relatively easy access to capital funds.

The remaining percentage faces structural dysfunction in the institutions supposed to oversee the allocation of funds and an “incoherent public policy” that complicate access to investments for startups.

Risk-averse investors sometimes tell project bearers that they prefer to place their money in limited companies—where owners are responsible for their debts to the extent of investment—rather than in capital risk projects like startups, where there is a high risk of losing the money invested.

As innovation is highly correlated with risk-taking, l’Economiste noted, one consequence of Moroccan investors’ risk-averse attitude is that innovative but risky projects almost never get funded.

With the advent of information capital technologies and an increasingly digitized global economy, the newspaper added that Morocco’s financial markets should ease the funding process for startups and ensure the kingdom’s smooth and timely integration into the prevailing financial system.

“Mutual efforts are needed,” wrote l’Economiste, calling for collaboration between young innovators and investors to “change the [sector’s] current direction” and prepare Morocco’s technology sector for the challenges of the digitized economy.

Will AI be the most revolutionary technology seen in decades ?


From SIRI to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence (AI) is progressing rapidly. While science fiction often portrays AI as robots with human-like characteristics, AI can encompass anything from Google’s search algorithms to IBM’s Watson to autonomous weapons.

Artificial intelligence today is properly known as narrow AI (or weak AI), in that it is designed to perform a narrow task (e.g. only facial recognition or only internet searches or only driving a car). However, the long-term goal of many researchers is to create general AI (AGI or strong AI). While narrow AI may outperform humans at whatever its specific task is, like playing chess or solving equations, AGI would outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task.

Why research AI safety?

In the near term, the goal of keeping AI’s impact on society beneficial motivates research in many areas, from economics and law to technical topics such as verification, validity, security and control. Whereas it may be little more than a minor nuisance if your laptop crashes or gets hacked, it becomes all the more important that an AI system does what you want it to do if it controls your car, your airplane, your pacemaker, your automated trading system or your power grid. Another short-term challenge is preventing a devastating arms race in lethal autonomous weapons.

In the long term, an important question is what will happen if the quest for strong AI succeeds and an AI system becomes better than humans at all cognitive tasks. As pointed out by I.J. Good in 1965, designing smarter AI systems is itself a cognitive task. Such a system could potentially undergo recursive self-improvement, triggering an intelligence explosion leaving human intellect far behind. By inventing revolutionary new technologies, such a superintelligence might help us eradicate war, disease, and poverty, and so the creation of strong AI might be the biggest event in human history. Some experts have expressed concern, though, that it might also be the last, unless we learn to align the goals of the AI with ours before it becomes superintelligent.


Siri may get smarter. Apple has paid an undisclosed amount for startup Laserlike, which created a machine learning app that keeps people up to date on news and articles they’re interested in. Tech news site The Information reported that Laserlike, founded by ex-Google engineers, will add muscle to Apple’s A.I. group and could help improve Apple’s Siri digital assistant.

China to surpass the U.S. China will likely produce more high-quality A.I. research papers than the U.S. by 2020, according to the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. The non-profit’s analysis of over two million academic A.I. papers “shows a clear trend of Chinese ascendance in the field of A.I.”

Spending big bucks on data labeling. Australian data technology company Appen plans to buy startup Figure Eight for nearly $300 million, Appen said. Figure Eight, whose investors include Salesforce Ventures and Trinity Ventures, helps companies label and annotate their data for deep learning projects.

Facebook has released free designs for a new server and specialized computer chips that are intended for tasks like speeding up data training for deep learning projects. The social networking giant typically open sources its data center hardware blueprints so that other companies can inspect and improve the designs.


Tell the truth. U.K.-based venture capital firm MMC Ventures analyzed 2,830 European “A.I.” startups and discovered that 40% of the companies don’t actually use machine learning in their products but instead use conventional data analytics technology.

Lower your expectations. Be skeptical of cybersecurity companies that promise A.I. that can “automatically detect unknown attacks” in corporate networks, according to trade publication Information-Age. Machine learning is good at helping security staff sift through lots of data in corporate networks to determine “signals” that could indicate a hack. But the article said that technology won’t replace a company’s security teams, who have the expertise to interpret the data.

Experts disagree on how A.I. will change our lives. Two recently published books based on interviews and essays from the world’s A.I. pioneers are frustrating because the experts often disagree about some of A.I.’s most important questions. Vox reviewed the books Possible Minds and Architects of Intelligence and found that they make for “gripping reading,” but they don’t provide a simple conclusion about how A.I. will transform society over the next few decades.

Among the disagreements:

Whether A.I. will experience another “winter” like during the early 1990s.
Whether neural networks will lead to more computer science breakthroughs or are just a fad.
When computers will truly reach a level of intelligence akin to human beings.

As Vox’s Kelsey Piper wrote, “The disagreements on display in these anthologies aren’t just charming intellectual spats — they’re essential to the policy decisions that we need to make today.”

Hearst Magazines named Mike Smith as the company’s chief data officer, a newly created role leading the company’s digital advertising and data operations. Smith was previously a vice president in Hearst’s digital unit in charge of revenue platforms and operations.

Boston’s mayor appointed Stefanie Costa Leabo as the city’s chief data officer, overseeing various data-related projects. She was previously Boston’s director of performance management.

Tejumade Afonja, a young software innovator building an AI community in Lagos

Tejumade Afonja, a graduate with Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. After her university education she started learning how to code. She had the opportunity to work closely with the machine learning expert on the team to help build the natural language model of the bot. She is currently an AI Engineer at InstaDeep in Nigeria.

Tejumade Ajonja to where she is today because she has a drive to not only continuously learn, but to also continuously prove that women can be in the forefront of technology. As Tejumade continues to gain more skills and further her own pursuit of understanding artificial intelligence (AI) she is also working to promote building up the AI community, for both men and women, in Nigeria.

AI Saturdays (AI6) is a 14-week global initiative organized by the brilliant people from AI Saturdays Lagos is a community of AI enthusiasts which she co-organized with Femi Azeez. At AI6 Lagos, they share a common goal of advancing our knowledge about artificial intelligence and kick-ass in AI by synergizing every Saturday for 16 weeks to nurture knowledge about AI.

Each week AI Saturdays (AI6) they will go through deep learning materials through, discuss what they learned over lunch, and then go through Stanford’s convolutional neural networks for visual recognition (CS231n) followed by looking at research papers from Stanford, and they end with team discussions. All of this helps the group to get more familiar with different AI topics, get comfortable reading research papers, and better understand deep learning topics.

She believes that, the use the knowledge of AI can solve some of the most challenging problems in Nigeria which include traffic control, government accountability, power supply, and better infrastructure.


Climate change and extreme weather events

While most scientists don’t dispute the link between global warming and extreme weather, the once skeptical public is now starting to come around—especially following 2011, when floods, droughts, heat waves and tornadoes took a heavy toll on the U.S. According to a poll conducted by researchers at Yale University’s Project on Climate Change Communication, four out of five Americans reported personally experiencing one or more types of extreme weather or a natural .

  • Drought

Higher temperatures lead to increased rates of evaporation, including more loss of moisture through plant leaves. Even in areas where precipitation does not decrease, these increases in surface evaporation and loss of water from plants lead to more rapid drying of soils if the effects of higher temperatures are not offset by other changes (such as reduced wind speed or increased humidity). As soil dries out, a larger proportion of the incoming heat from the sun goes into heating the soil and adjacent air rather than evaporating its moisture, resulting in hotter summers under drier climatic conditions.

  • Heavy Downpours

Heavy downpours are increasing nationally, especially over the last three to five decades. The heaviest rainfall events have become heavier and more frequent, and the amount of rain falling on the heaviest rain days has also increased. Since 1991, the amount of rain falling in very heavy precipitation events has been significantly above average. This increase has been greatest in the Northeast, Midwest, and upper Great Plains – more than 30% above the 1901-1960 average. There has also been an increase in flooding events in the Midwest and Northeast, where the largest increases in heavy rain amounts have occurred.

  • Heat Waves

Heat waves are periods of abnormally hot weather lasting days to weeks. The number of heat waves has been increasing in recent years. This trend has continued in 2011 and 2012, with the number of intense heat waves being almost triple the long-term average. The recent heat waves and droughts in Texas (2011) and the Midwest (2012) set records for highest monthly average temperatures. Analyses show that human-induced climate change has generally increased the probability of heat waves., And prolonged (multi-month) extreme heat has been unprecedented since the start of reliable instrumental records in 1895.

  • Floods 


Flooding may intensify in many U.S. regions, even in areas where total precipitation is projected to decline. A flood is defined as any high flow, overflow, or inundation by water that causes or threatens damage. Floods are caused or amplified by both weather- and human-related factors. Major weather factors include heavy or prolonged precipitation, snowmelt, thunderstorms, storm surges from hurricanes, and ice or debris jams. Human factors include structural failures of dams and levees, altered drainage, and land-cover alterations (such as pavement).
Worldwide, from 1980 to 2009, floods caused more than 500,000 deaths and affected more than 2.8 billion people. In the United States, floods caused 4,586 deaths from 1959 to 2005 while property and crop damage averaged nearly 8 billion dollars per year (in 2011 dollars) over 1981 through 2011. The risks from future floods are significant, given expanded development in coastal areas and floodplains, unabated urbanization, land-use changes, and human-induced climate change.

  • Hurricanes

There has been a substantial increase in most measures of Atlantic hurricane activity since the early 1980s, the period during which high quality satellite data are available.,, These include measures of intensity, frequency, and duration as well as the number of strongest (Category 4 and 5) storms. The recent increases in activity are linked, in part, to higher sea surface temperatures in the region that Atlantic hurricanes form in and move through. Numerous factors have been shown to influence these local sea surface temperatures, including natural variability, human-induced emissions of heat-trapping gases, and particulate pollution. Quantifying the relative contributions of natural and human-caused factors is an active focus of research.

While there are many uncertainties in attribution studies, researchers have shown that human-caused climate change is nudging the temperatures up and increasing the odds of new extremes in heat and rainfall.
